2011 has been a very busy year for Google. A lot has changed and if you want to get more visitors to your website, you need to keep up with the latest updates. Below are the most important updates you should keep in mind.

Low quality websites are filtered

Google released many updates in ranking algorithms recently which tried to filter low quality websites from their search results.

Scraper websites or any website which has low quality content does not get high ranks anymore. Because of these changes in the latest Google algorithm changes, some sites have experienced a traffic drop of 70% or more.

To do: don’t try to promote your website with quick-fix solutions. Quality is more important than quantity.

Search has become social

Social impressions like the amount of Google +1 clicks, tweets and Facebook mentions now influence the position of websites on Google search result pages.

To do: add social sharing buttons to your website and encourage your website visitors to mention your website on social networks.

Search results are more than just links

most of the web pages shown on Google shows more than a list of 10 web pages. Search results not includes images, news and local information etc..

To do: use a holistic approach to promote your website: optimize the content of your web pages, get good backlinks to your website, offer local services, submit videos about your business to Google to make sure that your website gets listed in all possible places on Google’s result page.

Page speed has become a ranking signal

Web surfers tend to be more happier if they get what they want quickly as possible. Even though website speed is only a minor factor in Googles ranking algorithms, it makes sense to optimize the loading speed and performance in your website.

To do: make sure that your web design and web development is done properly to load as quickly as possible.

It’s not just Google: Yahoo/Bing is getting more important

Although we all know that Google has the biggest market share, Yahoo and Bing has a combined market share of 33%. So if you are not getting 33% of traffic from Yahoo and Bing you should start to optimize your website for these search engines as well.

To do: if you want to get 33% more visitors, optimize some of your pages for Yahoo/Bing.

A lot of things have changed recently and we continually update our optimization techniques and be up to date with the latest search engine algorithm changes. If you need help to optimize your website feel free to contact us at info@extreme.web.lk or call us at +94773155222 to speak to one of our seo consultants.

Increasing the Power of Print

Quick Response Codes (QR Codes) combine the power of print marketing, mobile marketing and the internet to improve response rates on printed marketing collateral. By simply taking a photo of a QR Code, a small two-dimensional bar code on print materials, smart phone users can access more information about a promotion, event or product via their web-enabled phone. Essentially, QR Codes have website links embedded in them, directing users to your desired webpage without having to type the URL in manually.

The ability to respond to a marketing piece or advertisement instantly via a mobile phone makes QR codes one of the most innovative cross-media marketing tools available.

Enjoy increased response rates with tracking capabilities to see who is responding to your QR code-enabled marketing piece. Smart analytics and custom reports will let you see response rates, location of your recipients and more.

QR Codes are ideal for:

Print Catalogs and Advertisements: QR codes can take readers directly to your ecommerce site or product detail, simplifying the entire order process.

Event Registration and RSVPs: Add QR codes to promotional pieces such as invitations and time-sensitive pieces to give recipients the ability to respond instantly and automatically add the event to their calendar.

Coupons: Offer virtual coupons using QR codes.

Personalized URLs (PURLs): Increase the response rate of your direct mail pieces by combining PURLs with QR codes.

Increase the potential of your print marketing collateral with the aid of QR codes for improved response rates and better return on investment (ROI). To learn more about how QR codes can increase the success of your next print campaign, contact us at Extreme Web by calling us at +9477-3155-222 or request a quote now!

The popular blog publishing tool WordPress has joined the growing cadre of sites dropping support for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 6 web browser. The recently upgraded WordPress.com brings a handful of new features and a revamped, cleaner design in the admin pages, but perhaps the biggest news in the release is that the admin pages no longer support IE 6.

Users visiting the admin section of WordPress.com with IE 6 will now see a message to upgrade their browser (the same message will appear in the self-hosted WordPress 3.2 when it is released in June). The WordPress blog says it’s dropping IE 6 because, “it has required increasingly complex code trickery to make the WordPress dashboard work in the IE 6 browser, which was introduced 10 years ago and does not support current web standards.”

WordPress is just the latest in a long list of sites that have abandoned IE 6, including Gmail, YouTube, Basecamp and hundreds of others.

Indeed you’d be hard pressed to find a web developer who wants to keep supporting IE 6. Even Microsoft has set up a website that essentially dances on the grave of IE 6 (after WordPress announced it would drop IE 6, Microsoft actually said “thank you WordPress“).

However, according to Net Applications, IE 6 still has almost 12 percent user share worldwide. In the U.S. the number is just under 3 percent, but in China it’s still nearly 35 percent.

Compounding the problem are the number of corporate intranets that require IE 6. Microsoft is hard at work trying to convince large corporations to upgrade — if you’re still using IE 6, that means you haven’t upgraded to Windows 7, which is Microsoft’s real goal with the kill IE 6 campaign — but for Microsoft’s biggest customers, upgrading means investing millions of dollars in new infrastructure.

While developers may enjoy dropping IE 6 because of its subpar support for web standards, for end users that’s generally not a concern. What is, or at least should be, the bigger concern for users is that IE 6 is less secure.

If you’re part of the tiny segment of users that can — but haven’t — upgraded from IE 6, we suggest doing so. Grab a copy of Firefox or Chrome and join the modern web.

Recently the Opera Development Center has dived head first to the complexities of CSS3:target option, along with a tutorial which shows an example of how :target option couls be used in order to trigger fades and animations without using any special JavaScripts which is quite interesting.

The end result is a sliding series of animated transitions which moves and fades in and out as you click menu links. All this is done with pure CSS without a single line of JavaScript used.

But of course it has a catch – This example works only on Opera Browser…!!

The biggest issue with the :target option is that a problem in WebKit prevents it from functioning on Chrome and Safari web browsers. The opera tutorial has a solution to this with a media query that unfortunately applies to Gecko, so the example really works only in Opera.

While that is more than enough to stop the majority of developers from using:target, this tutorial is nevertheless a good glimpse of what will be happening in the very near future. Bu the good thing about :target is that it really forces you to put more attention to the hierarchy of you HTMl code and for that alone operas tutorial is well worth reading.

Developing a website that works well in all web browser isn’t easy, particularly if you’re using newer elements in HTML5. Even among modern, standards-compliant browsers, HTML5 support varies, and figuring out how and when to fall back on other solutions means a lot of cross-browser testing.

Thanks to virtual machines, testing across web browsers has become much easier. But if you’re looking for an even easier way to see what you site looks like in, say, Internet Explorer 6, check out Browserling, a new cross-browser testing tool that embeds any another browser inside your browser.

Browserling relies on Amazon-hosted virtual machines to do the embedding. The result is a real-time, fully interactive look at your site in virtually any Windows web browser, (Yep, it only works in Windows). It’s a step up from other web-based browser tests which just offer screenshots of what your site looks like in other browsers.

Unfortunately, as cool as the concept is, Browserling has a few drawbacks. The worst part of the service is that, for now anyway, you’ll be waiting in the queue for some time. To keep resources under control, Browserling severely limits the number of users connecting to the service at any one time. You’re also limited to how long you can use Browserlings VMs — 90 seconds is all you’ll get without creating an account. If you sign up you’ll have five minutes, which gives you a better chance to check out your website, but is hardly enough time for real testing.

The site advertises paid plans, which promise to let you ditch the queue and time limits, but at the moment the paid option isn’t actually available.

Our other main gripe is that while Internet Explorer is well represented — you can test in versions 5.5 all the way up to IE9 Beta — older versions of other browsers are scarce. While it’s true IE is probably what most developers are interested in, it would be nice to see older versions of Firefox, Safari and Opera supported as well.

While it would be premature to delete your own virtual machines, Browserling has potential. If Browserling can work out the kinks — we experienced numerous errors, crashing VMs and other problems, but it’s probably just getting smothered by hugs — it may eventually help take some of the pain out of cross-browser testing.

Google Chrome’s comic book is a nice way to introduce to the world a new web browser, but everyone does not know what a URL or web app means. “20 Things I Learned About Browsers and the Web” is a guidebook created by the Google Chrome team which tries to explain complicated terms such as “Internet”, “cloud computing”, “JavaScript”, “HTML5″, “cookies”, “URL”, “IP address” using illustrations and real life analogies. Here’s an example:

“An IP address is a series of numbers that tells us where a particular device is on the Internet network, be it the google.com server or your computer. It’s a bit like mom’s phone number: just as the phone number tells an operator which house to route a call to so it reaches your mom, an IP address tells your computer which other device on the Internet to communicate with — to send data to and get data from.”

The guidebook is a very good example of an HTML5 web application which functions offline and Google recommends to read it in “Chrome or any up-to-date, HTML5-compliant modern browser”. Most of the examples from the book are about Google Chrome and that’s what makes it look like a Chrome ad.

With the expansion of web hosts there is a lot of competition and resellers who say that they can give the consumer up to 99% uptime. Dependable web hosting is critical for websites. It can basically be the difference between someone who visits frequently, and a visitor who has no intentions of coming back at all.

Pages often returned as not available can also impact your rating with today’s ultra-clever search engines who are also in a race of their own to beat their own competition after all, a customer returns to good service.

Why is reliable web hosting a requirement? I immediately thought of your peace as a factor. Think of being ready to update your website and not being able to because the server isn’t working. Customers expect good service and will not return to a website that does not offer it. Obstacles have to be dealt with as soon they have been identified, to avoid repeating the same mistakes which cause companies to fail.

When is it critical to have one? It’s important anyway, very important unless you have a website you aren’t too concerned about people seeing. Today’s new search engine methods mean that reports are made each time a URL is inaccessible and this can lead to a drop in search engine rankings after so long.

If your company includes a significant web presence, you must have a good hosting service. In today’s market you need to have at least 99% uptime, there are some companies that even exceed this.

Picture this: if you have 20% downtime, this means you are loosing up to 20% of potential customers. This is affecting your earning ability, thus losing you potential revenue. As with any employee, the webhost should not make you lose money!

Is there a way I can check to see if my webhost is the best one for my needs? You don’t, not at first. There are many methods that can be used to find out their reliability. The free tools on the internet that are used to monitor up and downtime are becoming more popular in the search for the top search engine.

Many now realize that it is essential to minimize server downtime ,if you get poor communication from the webhost you use, tools like these could be a lifesaver. A responsible webhost will most probably inform you in advance of possible problems or planned downtime either via email or a portal on its own website. Beware of webhosts who hide performance information as they are afraid that they will scare off potential customers.

SEO also known as Search Engine Optimization holds the popularity for enabling webmasters to get a vast return of reserves. A high grade of the correct keyword in it has a huge impact on your profits.

The instruction below gives a clear idea of the importance to select the right keyword for SEO. By following the instructions you could make sure your profits are increased.

Finding the financial values of keywords

You can find the financial value of the keyword by starting a Google AdWords campaign and select the similar exact match. Then point the ad to the page on your website that is most applicable to the keyword.

Next Track the impressions and the conversion rate of the ad. You can get useful data by tracking at least 500 clicks. With that particular data you can make a guess about a value of a visitor who finds your website through that keyword.

A concrete example

Your ad might have had 10,000 impressions during a week and 200 visitors have clicked the ad to visit your website. 6 of those who visited might have purchased products on your website and you would have a profit of $500.

The keyword has sent 200 visitors to your website and 6 of them have bought the products. As the clean profit is $500, the average of a single visitor who finds your website using the keyword is worth $2.50 to your company. (200 visitors created a profit of $500: $500/200 visitors = $2.50/visitor)

What does this mean for your search engine optimization campaigns?

The average position of a keyword has 40% of click-through rate (according to several studies). In the above example the ad was displayed 10,000 times and while it was clicked 200 times, you would get 4,000 visitors visiting your site per week.

As the average visitor adds $2.50 to your profits (see above) you would earn $10,000 per week with that keyword.

That is $520,000 per year with a single keyword! That is why businesses love search engine optimization.

This sounds unbelievable but search engine optimization makes it possible. It’s simple maths and it really works.

Latent semantic indexing (LSI) is a method which all major search engines use. Do you think that your website has taken this into consideration? How does it effect the ranking of your web pages in Search Engines such as Google?

What is latent semantic indexing?

LSI is the way search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing associate your website with certain terms to concepts when indexing your website. For example, Paris and Hilton are associated with a woman instead of a city and a hotel, Tiger and Woods are associated with golf.

To find out what keywords are related to a certain keyword, type in a keyword and add a tilde in front of it. Then Google will mark the related keywords in bold text in the search results page returned. It seems that Google finds the word “Nokia” related to “phone”.

How can Google match keywords with certain concepts?

Google has billions of web pages in its index. If Google finds that many web pages contain both the word Paris and the word Hilton then Google might assume that these keywords are related. The other words on these pages could give Google a hint that this special word combination is about a woman.

Words that frequently appear very close to each other could get a tighter connection. Google has a lot of data that allows them to calculate the relation between different words.

What does this mean for the position of your web pages in Google’s search results?

If you want to be listed for certain keywords, you must show Google that your website is relevant to a certain topic. There are several things that you can do to increase the relevancy of your website for a topic:

1. Optimize different individual web pages of your website for different keywords
2. Get links from semantically relevant pages
3. Use a meaningful site architecture
4. Find out why other pages rank higher than yours

Don’t focus on a single keyword when optimizing your web pages. If you want to prepare your website for advanced search engine algorithms then you have to create a website that has been optimized for many different but related search terms.

In addition, it’s important that the links to your website come from topically related pages so that search engines put your website in the right context. Our website optimization consultants in Sri Lanka can help you with both.
