Today, we will continue from where we left off in our previous blog post, and discuss about the Pros and Cons of working with Joomla and WordPress. As I stated previously the two heavy-weights we have decided to review today are two of the most notorious CMS systems out there: Joomla vs WordPress. Although, we have vast experience in both – each have their benefits and disadvantages.

Advantages and Disadvantages with using Joomla

Joomla Pros

• Full fledged CMS
• More powerful and robust
• Admin Users and Password protected areas
• Much more than just articles
• SEO Friendly System with plug-ins

Joomla Cons

• Bigger learning curve
• Slower loading times
• Javascript and CSS can get bulky

Advantages and Disadvantages with using WordPress

WordPress Pros

• Excellent blogging software right out of the box
• SEO Friendly right out of the box
• Easier Installation
• Friendlier graphical user interface (GUI)
• Administrate articles, comments, and blogs easier
• Lightweight and easy to use

WordPress Cons

• Articles are more “bloggy” sorted by publich dates
• Limited on components / extensions
• Lightweight / limited on power
• Limited on Administration of other portions

For those of which are unfamiliar with what a CMS is, or what it can be used for. A CMS is computer software that is used in organizing and collaborating the creation of content and other documents. CMS is a combination of large database, File System, and other related software modules, which are used to store and retrieve huge amounts of data when required.

These web-publishing systems are different from the databases in the sense that these can index text, audio clips, video clips, or images in a database. So Content Management Systems are one of the most significant ways a company can improve its website effectiveness, and simply being able to edit your own website without any HTML knowledge needed.

Joomla

Joomla is an open source solution for CMS (Content Management System) which helps you to build websites and powerful online applications. Joomla is easy to use and good for extensibility, thus making it the most popular website software available today. Best of all, Joomla is an open source solution that is freely available to everyone. It is extremely robust and there are a wide variety of extensions readily available for Joomla, which can be found at: Joomla Exensions.

WordPress

WordPress is one of the most popular open-source and free blogging software. WordPress is written in PHP using MySQL. Today, it has grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on hundreds of thousands of sites and seen by tens of millions of people each day. We’ve found that WordPress works great with blogs, but lacks as a primary CMS (in our view) but it keeps improving day by day! A list of free themes, extensions, and plugins for WordPress can be found at: http://wordpress.org/extend/
